I've been meaning to post this for a while, but I've been busy. I'll keep it short as I'm trying to get an early night as I'm fishing in the morning The first works party of the year is this Sunday (the 12th) at the Canes/Cairns. Meet up at 0900 ish, work until midday (ish). All tools provided, but if anyone has a trolley to help carry the tools to the river bank, please bring it along. Coffee and Tea provided. Planned works - clear undergrowth with brush cutter and clear existing swims with strimmers etc.... If anyone needs directions, send me a message. The following works party is at 'Paradise' on the 26th, I'll post info on that next week. Unfortunately I'm working this Sunday, but I'll be at the one on the 26th. There is a mailing list for works parties, if any members want to be on the list contact the club via - stocktonanglers@clannet.co.uk

I'm at the work party tomorrow but can't make the 26th, try and make them if you can lads as the club is trying to re-open a stretch that has become unfishable due to it becoming that overgrown.

Good turn out Sunday and well pleased with what we achieved on a wet Sunday morning. I went back Monday afternoon and spent three hours on of the new swim's we created. Making a fishing area and some steps for access. All strengthened using wood from the willows we removed and the masses of flood drift wood on the bank.

Was that the peg you were working on when Michael and I left John? Looked a great spot, a good turn out and a pity the weather was not a bit kinder. If any of you lads are out you will recognise John's pegs, they are a real work of art and built in a such a way that not erosion occurs. Can't make the next work party as I need to study for an exam but will be at the one after.

I am unable to make the work party on the 26th. Week end family get together in Edinburgh, taking the wife to see her brother. He went to work up there in 1970 and never came back to Teesside.

I've already done it by email but I'd like to say it again.
A great big thank you to all the 14 lads who turned out in the rain at 'The Canes' work party. As Noah said in 1450BC, "scattered showers, my arse!"
As usual Jacques got straight into his 'steps' frame of mind. This is good, not bad. Bank digging is not allowed under the club rules as it can lead to serious erosion. However, Jacques and a few others developed a method of creating steps without digging-out last year and he's an expert at it. We've got some really steep and slippy banks in places and his efforts make swims a lot safer. Providing this is done under supervision at the work parties it's acceptable.
A lot of other swims were cleared of undergrowth and some serious 'jungle' removed to make a brand new one. There's still a lot of work to be done here but since the work party things are a lot better.
I took a walk down to the beginning of Worsall Gill Wood with a few members who didn't know the water. One of the comments that pleased me a great deal was that you can learn so much about the club waters just by coming on the work party.
The next work party is on Sunday at Paradise Gravels (Newsham Grange). We'll meet around 9.00am and all members are welcome. There's a great deal of work needed to make the riverbanks safer and more easily accessible and any help you can give us will be very much appreciated.

You'll be very welcome for a couple of hours on Sunday. we've all got limits on the time we can give. From Yarm high street turn left immediately you've crossed Yarm Bridge. From Stockton turn right immediately after the traffic lights leading on to Yarm Bridge. Go through Aislaby and you'll eventually come to a series of 90 degree left and right hand bends. One of these bends, it's a right-hander and I think it's the third, has a sign saying Newsham Grange. Go right down this track and you'll come to the club car park. We'll have some tools with us but anything that will cut undergrowth such as scythes will be useful as will things like bow saws. Thanks for the offer to pick stuff up but we're OK at the moment. Don't forget your tea mug. See you Sunday.

I will be doing some mid week work parties this year and you'd be very welcome on them. Two of these will be at Jackson's Farm erecting new stiles with the help of the farmer. The fences there are a nightmare for our older members. If you'd like me to contact you when mid week work parties come up just send your email address to stocktonanglers@clannet.co.uk saying 'for Doug Davison' and I'll put you on my mid week list.

I've just tested the email link I sent you and it doesn't work. If you're sending your email address you'll have to type stocktonanglers@clannet.co.uk into your email programme.
