I watched a guy fishing on the Wye using a pin and Stepped Up GTi, took him 20mins to land a 6lb barbel and his thumb was on fire from trying to brake the drum.

But was it fun or just making life hard for himself ?? ive only seen it on videos looks appealing but are you just making work for yourself just for the sake of using a pin when its not really the right tool for the job, well at least not these day imho ??

Mick, when I first used a pin I agreed with you that's it's not the best tool for the job. However, wading in.and trotting directly downstream, thumbing te spool to hold the float back, I honestly don't think you can get a more natural presentation with the float

The more I use the pin, the better it feels. It's actually not hard work in the slightest once you get used to it, and as for clutch or playing a fish, it's just as quick as a fixed spool, as long as you are using your thumb correctly to break the runs.

Cant argue at all with that Jim i agree 100% that for river work it cant be beaten at all for control and presentation, but my point isnt that it was mainly that why use a reel thats not suited to handling fish like Barbel and causing yourself hard work and stressing the fish when their really is no need to because tackle and reels have evolved so much, i know that can also be said about pins as well and im also aware that the pin itself is capable of taking the stresses put on it by big fish but is the Angler using it??? would you fish for Pike with a pin ?? i personally wouldnt because its not the right reel for the job, just my thoughts though Jimmy and everyone is entitled to theirs......long as there the same as mine lmao

Tell me that when youve had a 10lb barbel on the end and not a 3lb chub, theres a world of difference in how well it handles and easy it is to use then i suspect mate

Ok mate, will do!
There are many people who pike fish using a pin. It is something I would try.

The fights are also more exciting or frightening, as the fish moves around the swim, snags become far more dangerous.
Taken from the article.....now is that wise just for the sake of fun ??

Not really. If you use the correct gear, strong line and a powerful rod, it should make no difference to fish welfare.

So using the fish welfare line, should the thousands of people who fly fish for big salmon stop doing it? I'm told tree isn't a stronger fish out there.
What about the fly fishing for monsters on tv?
