Northumbrian Water have opened Lockwood as a coarse fishery, only mentions stocks of Roach and Perch, so presume is going to be limited to those species.

What a fall from grace ,it goes from a UK premier trout water , to the bloody worse course fish water imaginable , il visit the place to walk dog , and God help the small head of beutifull wild brownies .
I'm genuinley gutted , Stillwater fly fishing within close distance has suffered tremendously at lockwoods demise , Leighton is a lure basher venue , Sharpley great but gets too busy even during week , west house not challenging enough too easy .
I might return to bellflask a good size gravel pit ,a d of course grassholme .
Bloody bream , and they must be mad , half a dozen cormorants work Lockwood , setting up base near tower on dam and working whole reservoir , prepare to see lots of bream bones

With the money NWA have and available to spend on turning Lockwood into a coarse fishery it could be a very very good coarse fishery with the potential to be one of the best if not the best day ticket water in the North
It has'nt always been a trout fly fishery, plenty of folk fished it before Gordon Byers ever got a lease on it

And ignore bollocks about good head of perch , there's some ,but good head no ,
And there's lots of small roach very few worth catching , majority in 2 to 4 inch range , with most bigger ones being taken by cormorants likely ,
Lockwood is shallow and any stocking of bream will be a disaster especially in winter with less anglers .
I honestly advise not to get excited at this news , if you want to pay seven quid and catch 20 or more tiny roach then go for it , but lots o places you can catch bigger ones in better numbers

bream will survive andy they are very hardy fish throughout winter. what would be nice is a stillwater not full of mudpigs.bream/tench/roach sounds good with a good head of chub to feed throughout the winter and some crucians which might struggle although good and hardy.ile be giving it a few goes throughout the closed season for sure.nice place to take missis aswell for a chillout.

I hear what you say m8 , but lockwoods location , cormorant issues , poachers , and other reasons it won't be a premier course fishery .
It just won't , if they stock tench, chub, carp and the likes they will get poached for other fisheries it's impossible to police , and unfortunately lots of scumbags locally .
It will also turn into a public play ground , Lockwood although scenic is within walking and driving range of lots of people .
And don't think I'm exaggerating the cormorant issue ,half a dozen even more in winter call it home , and we used to watch umpteen 1 and half pound trout getting taken .
I'll call it now , it will be short term interesting , long term failure as anything resembling a good course lake .

the cormorant issue goes without saying, every water suffers cormorant damage im affraid bud, even albert park/hemmo have 7 birds a piece something we got to grin and bare, sad i know but true.lets hope something can be put in place.thats why a lot of fishery's are reverting to stocking bream/carp.they stick on the pounds much quickers, hence a higher survival rate.if it goes mud pigs i wouldnt fish it.

It would be awesome tench venue , ticks every box , shallow bays , deeper spots , so float fishing would be great for those like me that get bored watching Leger rods .
But no way they stock tech , they'd get stolen as would carp , Northumbrian water need to realise yes it's in countryside , but it's a stone's throw from teeside and loftus , and all they will do is create a place for undesirables to steel fish , Lockwood has so many access points ,it's impossible to police .
I don't care for bream.,i know lads on here say they do fight ,but in my experience they don't , and i personally when pleasure fishing couldn't care less about putting a good weight together , it seems pointless .
The problem with cormorant at Lockwood basha is your totally defensless to scare them off , lakes too big for nets , and no way can they shoot them , Lockwood is a bird watchers haven and loads go and would report in a flash .
Also when it was fly fishery plenty of dog walkers and ramblers and now only going to get worse .
Il never fish it , there will be a purple patch if they stock it , but within a year or two it will go down swanny .
I don't understand why they didn't carry it on as a trout fishery , guess there just isn't any money in it , found out Sharpley putting there prices up quite a bit too , Stillwater fly fishing is going to die in North ,Brian moorland is approaching retirement , but that's great news for pike anglers as iv heard rumours it will end up a dedicated pike water , now that i might try .
Northumbrian water are gonna get a reality check , those cormorants I estimate will eat between 30 and 50 small bream a day easy , and in shallow water they will catch them easy .
Lockwood ended as a fishing venue when Gordon jacked in .

Its a real shame and I tend to agree with Andy, I cant see it taking off. I did have a look up last week and got a netful of roach and perch but it would need something more than that to get me back. It would have been great to be kept as a trout fishery but as the ranger said to me.. "why open a burger king when there's a MacDonalds next door" - that says it all

we can live and hope that it takes off.be nice to have something as natural looking as lockwood as a coarse fishery. it all comes down to how well its supervised/maintained/and monitored, how funds work out for stocking and so fourth. you will never stop predation, goes without saying, but that can be said with any water old or new.poaching happens everywere, whether your out in the sticks/town centre watever the location. being were it is i understand its wide open yet its probabely got the size to be poached via rod and line only and not netting like some waters encounter. if it encounters the same fate as say the priory then it has no chance, bad management and overall running of a water will either make or break,it just needs plenty of monitoring.i for one hope it works out and look forward to the outcome.we are over run with commercials full of people out to make megga bucks and arnt exactely fish friendly in many ways, some are rediculousely sad to fish in.over stocked, fish a mess and no real welfare or monitoring the anglers that fish these places.under rated lines/illegal hooks and people without any knowledge of catching or looking after there fish.aslong as it dosnt end up like the latter ile be a happy chappie.
