With the upcoming closing of the rivers, I'm intrigued to know what your opinions are on the close season?
Is it necessary, or simply tradition? Why rivers and not lakes? Or does it just stem from a time when the upper class fly anglers wanted a break from fishing with the peasant coarse fisherman?!!
Necessary or not, I think it's good to give the rivers a rest. I always look forward to that date - June 16th. My only opinion is that the break is too long. 3 months is a long time!
Good job I'm going fluff chucking this spring

I sort of like the break myself, it does give you that excitement when the start of the season draws closer, but i dont think we need it tbh, Pike and Chub have already spawned before the close season and barbel and others are spawning on or just after the start of the season, so the excuse that its to allow fish to spawn without stress is lost really, and if that was or is the case then surely it should apply even more so to stillwaters where the fish really have no place to hide, at least on a river they could find a secluded bit that in accessible to anglers, just my own thoughts though

I think the original reason for the closed season was to let stocks recover as many years ago all fish taken in matches were killed. With changes in the the weather I'm not sure it is required any more, as Mick stated the different species have different spawning periods often outside the closed season. It does seem to give poachers a license to go out in the knowledge they are less likely to be challenged. I'll be out fluff chucking after the first week of April but still think the closed season need reviewing.

should either be abolished or shortend.seasons arnt the same as they were.said it for so long now and think most anglers would agree with the above posts.theres a lot less river anglers aswell than there was say 20 yrs ago.a lot are hitting the commercials now.also think closed season should qualify for all waters not just rivers.commercials for me are well stocked thus making foul hooking and stress to fish a lot more common.
