Was thinking why I don’t fish the tees much anymore , thinking on iv had brilliant days chub fishing , good perch fishing and bream , couple small barbel but I think the reason in the main is the river itself it’s so inaccessible even club waters from memory have a lot of water that isn’t very accessible , then there’s the river itself it’s just not got the appeal the Yorkshire rivers have , don’t get me wrong some beautiful areas with fast flows and deep pools but I just find the Swale and Especially the Wharfe so much more enticing , there’s one area I go that has cliffs and the tallest trees iv seen in this country , and above them kites and buzzards circle all day
As the light fades on this stretch the wildlife changes regularly see a badger , fox, deer and very close to you too
But also the barbel just go berserk most evening crashing about like nowhere iv seen them do it
And there lies the biggest draw there is still a good head of them to be found in both Swale and Wharfe and sadly they are largely none existent on tees with only pockets of them and good look finding them
I love a challenge really I do but I’m also realistic you could be fishing the Tees for them and not be in a Mike of one and I just got tired of it over two years I hooked four landing two small ones and losing two bigger in snags
I began to resent chub cause they always took the bait before the very seldom barbel might even see it
But like I said in another post I love barbell I’m obsessed with them and il continue to target them with my aim being a 13 pounder iv had them to 11 lb so far

Nice post Graeme there is barbel in tees no doubt but for what ever reason possible substrate they don’t breed well and most of fish caught are stock fish from several stockings over history , I’m sure they must breed too but they are deffinentiey not there in any significant numbers
I too walk Mike’s and miles and fish the most awkward swims going on all rivers , and am not adverse to clearing a swim away from others
I wasn’t been critical of the tees it’s a good river the chub I caught were ridiculous some evenings landing up to a dozen good sized fish
But I just got tired of chasing ghosts , ghosts that do exist but ghosts none the less
And it’s all relative catching chub out the tees is no more of a challenge than barbel out the wharfe
But it’s about perfecting your style, times , baits iv never been a bragging angler but I know if only one other angler in the club that gets similar catch rates on barbel
Plus iv always been a day away type of angler , I like to feel like I’m going somewhere instead of nipping twenty mins down road
I will pick up on tees again but will never just fish for barbel on there il fish for whatever comes with gear that can land chub from chublets to lumps and a whiskers if lucky enough
And it’s all preference chub are lovely to catch not great fighters but dogged , but compared to an 8lb to 10 lb barbel in a decent flue excitement wise it’s like comparing going for a drive in a normal car compared to a sports car it’s night and day Have caught loads of decent chub this year best on swale of getting on for 6 and half pound I think there’s photo on post bri put up

Some good comments here i agree the tees is a hard river at times, myself pypassed it for years when i got back into fishing untill i discovered how beautiful it is and only a short trips drive away.i was lucky enough to catch my barbel early on fishing the tees one being a double and some lovely chub which there are plenty off and have some off the best colors compared to other yorkshire rivers.me personslly if im chasing barbel some times hit a river where theres a good head of barbel mainly as a change and to get the season started but its not all about bagging up all the time as me personally think anyone can go out and do that you need a challenge in fishing which the tees is and it that what keeps you going untill your rewarded with a prize catch known you worked for it and applied good tatics and watercraft.

Thanks bud tbh I’m still of the belief we are a dying population future generations arnt gonna ever understand the beauty , tranquility , and appeal of what remains to me the best pastime in the world fishing especially on running water , if it ever rains properly tgat is iv never seen the Swale as low as it is in a loooooong time if ever

Yes m8 we were lucky to be in the generations we are , because we know different ways and experienced different things everything these days is all about instant gratification you want it you got it just use the App I hate it me but younger people don’t know any different I suppose
But fishing will always be part of my life there’s nothing like it I love it all from catching a 5 inch brownie on a team of traditional spider patterns to catching a big slab or chub to the ultimate whiskers it’s all magical
All we need now is some rain iv learnt this year especially that I don’t want to catch barbell that gives absolutely everything in its fight for freedom to then watch its gills going hundred mile an hour while I try rest it in water with next to no flow I’d rather do what I’m doing and take few weeks off
Looking at forecast ahead changeable weather not far away here’s hoping they right

The tees is a cracking river let's face when you fish it you rarely blank even if your targeting a big barbel the chub are always there for back up. I've tried loads this season more than I have in the last few years just for old times sake and haven't managed to find any. They are there but very low in numbers in my opinion if your catching the chub the barbel wouldn't be far behind but if it's chub chub chub everytime I doubt they're in that area. Barbel are greedy fish and they would be there before the chub if they were there in numbers. Just got to to keep trying different areas and hope one turns up. I'm sure some one off here will get one soon. Like where Andy is fishing its full of chub and yet he's catching barbel.

Uts very true what is being said about the Tees. Apart from the match fished areas around and below Yarm there is almost zero fishing activity. It's obvious by the lack if distance to bankside vegetation. Was on the association water low Dinsdale yesterday. OK some of the easy swimshad been fished but others not. The Tees has never been an easy access river and niw as my one time very fit body declines into old age l can now appreciate why older anglers no longer fish the rivers. There are so few younger men who fish moving water these days. I can see river angling for coarse fish in our area dying out.

I love both rivers.. (Swales& Tees), but If I had to choose one to fish for the rest of my days, it would be the Tees.. so much character, so challenging, so much unfished water to go at.. for a change I blew the dust off my centerpin and have been trotting on the Mid Tees today.. I say “trotting” but the flow was slow it was more “ambling”…beautiful morning to be out, never saw a soul, a good few fish (mainly dace) including some unexpected small roach which were a pleasure to see…Nothing spectacular but another day to file away in the memory banks..and a ten minute drive away.. can’t be bad..Kept a few in the net, hence the shot..

I hope I haven’t given the impression I’m dissing the tees couldn’t be more wrong
Tees is great but unfortunately my favourite species is largely not there I like to have my string pulled and other than good pike or using really light gear for chub it’s not going to be pulled much
In a way maybe I resent barbell cause the way the first one I ever caught nearly ripped my rod of rest and then took me fifteen minutes to land on a chub set up I was obsessed
The tees is great river mainly for trout on fly for me if I go now iv had few trips this year nothing big only pound or so but beautiful

Your last comments show an angler with touch of class it’s hard I know cause seasons fly past so fast but IMO and again just opinion river fish except small species should be left well alone while rivers are on their arse which they are
Couple weeks back on last trip I nearly lost a barbel to exhaustion iv caught hundreds abs iv never seen one gasping for so long and there was next to no flow and hard to get the net down to the water , I had to run about 50 yards to a bit shallower water and thankfully after about 15 minutes it perked up and went off ok but 100 percent if I hadn’t done that pretty sure would of died and I’d of been so upset haven’t been out since
And the faster water I released it in was just deep enough to cover its back normally there you’d be looking at three foot and on tgat day was about 10inches tgats how bad they are
I won’t be out till the rivers get flush through if they don’t I won’t be out at all

Sorry chaps, I've no class, never have had so I'm off fishing at the weekend, rain no rain. I hope others who enjoy their sport do the same to and not feel intimidated by posts such as above.
Life's to short.
