Looked at river levels and they all over place so decided on fawdington day ticket purely because it's a safe bet when banks are soaking ,possible floods ,and river always fishable even in highest water .
Arrived 2pm river clearly been over top of banks and on way down ,still carrying several feet extra tho .
Weather was dry but threatning clouds in distance , fished Hali pellet centre of river pointless casting to opposite bank cause of flow , first cast which is unusual if you know venue it's usually a sit and wait or roam about stretch for success I broke the usual and got a spirited 4lb barbel in mint condition .
Then started to rain steadily , I wanted to try where I'd fed swim in narrow gap in river that had dropped just enough to give it a go , rain coat on wandered up nothing for twenty minutes , then my rod wrapped and reel screamed I just grabbed the butt section and was in to a decent fish ,hard to tell cause of flow , then that sickening feeling everything went solid , sat on it and put rod on rest then thankfully after a minute or two it freed itself a long fight in flow ending with a barbel just under ten pounds , very pleasing and il ask Danny to put photo up , had forgot to take unhooking mat on the wander but the grass was soaked and boggy and fish came to no harm ,and after rest swam off strong .
Then the fun started a freak hour of the heaviest most prolonged rain iv seen in this country , relentless , and then out of nowhere a severe and I mean severe gale got up , destroyed my Brolly like a cocktail Brolly just demolished it , I grabbed everything I could and ran to the van , change of clothes a whole flask of coffee , and the weather eased to light winds and steady light rain , I have it another hour with just rod ,few bits of meat and a bank stick resulting in a small chub arround a pound .
Cold and feeling mixed emotions happy at two barbel pissed off about my Brolly and soaked gear I set off home , and the Thornton to topcliffe road was a few mile long flood ,
What a strange but yet enjoyable day
