Now then all, hope your all keeping safe and well 👍👍 What's everyone doing to keep themselves busy ? Making rigs, cleaning down gear, over dosing on you tube, tying flies ?? I got a new airflo 4/5wt fly fishing set up off my brother and sister for me birthday, which I'm obviously itching to use, but I've also decided I'm gonna have a go for pike on the fly, so I've been going through my tackle and I've got a 8/9wt medium 11ft diawa rod, and dug out a wide arbour reel which is loaded with 8wt floating line, which should be ok, but I think I'll probs change it to a 9wt intermediate fly line? Anyone ever had a go at fly fishing for pike ? Any or all advice would be appreciated 👍👍

I'd be giving scaling a good look at Mick when it opens up again, plenty of room for casting or even Wykeham winter lake near Scarbrough, if you're up for a challenge and got a good pair of chesties you could give semerwater a go too

You know what mate Seamer sounds ideal, I'd completely overlooked that !! It'll be ideal you can wade a fair way out so casting will be a doddle, no worries about hitting anything on the back cast, cheers for that Bri top tip 👍👍

I’ve did a little bit with the fly rod Mick, I mean the very basics but I Atleast have all the gear. I’ve been working on my boat during this lock down I’m quite chuffed having the time to get the work done and put thought into it, before going mad with a drill. I’ll take this opportunity to check the gear I have Mick, I know sinking lines are important to get the flies down unless your fishing shallow water.

I have the greys GRX large arbour reel with DI3 sinking line, I also have floating and intermediate.

Did it occasionally when trout fishing loch Corrib. I used a 9' foot rated rod that would throw a Wt fwd #9 sinker and a very expensive geared wide arbour reel. The outfit belonged to a Welsh guy who l fished with. He also fished for Tarpon regularly in the Caribbean. We used pike flies probably 03 or 04 sized single hooks. These flies were 6/8 long tied on a single. Bright colours with a prominent eyed head. Pity l gave what l had away many years ago. We used 12/15lb mono trace about 6' long with 6" of multi strand wire attached with lightweight quick connects for the fly. The method was to cast towards shoreline features. Allow the fly to sink then retrieve with a steady continuous hand over hand draw. The constant retrieve usually resulted in a soild hook up just inside the mouth. The fight was spectacular as l dont like handling pike l would pull hard to get them tail walking and hope they would come off. My pal had one nearly 20 and me 13lb with a lot of smaller fish.

Got myself a Preston box off ebay for a bargain £50,all washed down, cleaned, and generally tarted up ready for the new season. Reel lines changed, rigs and hooklengths tied, all clubs paid for, and all ready to go. Garage full of gleaming gear but nowhere to go for what looks like a couple of months at least. Garden's all sorted,no decorating to do,only work to look forward to tomorrow. Trouble is work means moving from the settee to a chair in the dining room for the forseeable future. Not all bad news though, dog thinks it's great having someone at home all day and I'm fit and healthy and hope everyone out there is the same. Keep doing the right things and we'll get through it .

How things will work out once we are over this is really complex. Global economy destroyed ,those like me on a company pension that the funds have disappeared reduced to trying to live of the state pension. Companies employing people have gone to the wall. Leaving tens of thousands out of work. No money to buy anything new. Nobody working in private industry no tax revenue so governments getting deeper and deeper in debt. Leaving a society that will struggle for a generation to get back into prosperity. Then looking at it another way. Nobody can afford to go anywhere so no jet flights, fewer car journeys less production so less atmospheric pollution. Less global warming.
