that's a good fish! well earned for in my opinion. I'm really thinking about trying for salmon this year but all I get is bad news about the numbers which isn't surprising with the seals at the barrage and otters throughout the river.

Can only be an up hill battle targetting salmon on the tees, but what an achievement it would be. Some think the tees barbel are a tough nut to crack, salmon must be in a different league.
Personally if I was targetting the migratory species I would head north, I recce'd a stretch of the wear last year and given I was on a stretch that screamed coarse fish I was shocked at how many sea trout I saw.
Have a look at this video on the tyne -
Those male salmon look impressive.

Salmon in the tees are a huge challenge. I saw one last year when fishing the middle tees, heard of a couple caught though just above darlington and a lot caught higher up, around eggleston and up. Fishing for them on the lower tees would be pointless in my opinion, the ones that get past the barrage would bomb through these waters and its in the pools where they start to hold up where you want to be fishing for them, or in high water when they are running from pool to pool.

Pierce bridge or even broken scar as they hold up there waiting for high water to run up the weir

Ive seen someone fishing for salmon on the same stretch a few times. It's not a stretch I'd really associate with salmon, a gravelly even paced stretch on what I would class the middle Tees, prop lower tees to game anglers.
Not sure if he's caught anything there before, will ask if I see him again

Welcome to the forum Ron, canny set up with good lads, very helpful with an abundance of knowledge covering all types of angling, as for sense of humour, just look at the ugly ba.tards profiles ( except mine) Youl laugh your nuts off. What's the difference between a hippo and zippo, ones heavy and the others a little lighter! ........... My phone rang last night and a bloke started singing stand and deliver and Prince Charming! I told him to sod off but he was Adam ant....

Spoke to a couple of guys who fish for sea Trout not far from Yarm. They recon they get a couple every season. Also saw one swimming upstream about 10lb in weight. Also saw a guy fishing for sea Trout after the close season.

Think I no the guy who you mean Daz he won't of caught any salmon because he doesn't use a fly he just puts a bit of fluff on the end so he doesn't catch out I've asked him for the last five seasons if he's had out he replies no still practising he is some kind of casting master he was on his last exam last time I spoke to him he's always moaning about the tees barrage though and seals

I no where use mean he usually goes down a couple of hours before dark just casts solid for a few hours some paicentce that I would need a fish every other cast to keep me keen. you'd think he'd swear the otters away but doesn't seem to bofer them

During the summer you used to be able to see groups of salmon parr topping, moving up and down the middle of the river on bassy woods stretch, hard to catch but a loaded waggled fished 2ft deep with a couple of maggots on would usually get you one.
