Hi Guys , sorry to have put up this reminder but due to recent events at Marske Reservoir just thought it may jog our thoughts with regards to, “ Fish Welfare”
It’s been reported that we have lost a 20lb + carp at Marske, known to the regulars as “Mindy”, due to poor handling. Supposedly the angler was trying to land the fish in a rather small landing net and subsequently struggled to get it out of the water resulting in bumping the fish a number of times against the scaffolding poles at the front of the platform. He then struggled with the fish and it fell onto the concrete base of the peg as he also had no unhooking mat.
The fish was found dead the next morning. The rules do say for both Marske and Hutton an unhooking mat is required and the bailiff’s at both these venue’s
“may” now start to enforce this rule. You “may” be asked to leave the fishery if you continue to ignore this request. All fish that are placed on the ground must be on an unhooking mat. With regards to a suitable sized net we just ask you to bear in mind that we appreciate that you may just be fishing for silver fish but you always have a chance of hooking something bigger and need to land it safely. Do you have any thoughts on minimum net size, maybe 20” or 24”. I do not believe we all need to carry big carp nets around but maybe something bigger than a “tea strainer” is required. We do know that a larger net and an unhooking mat may not have saved this fish but it may have given it a chance and the club cannot afford to replace a fish of that size. Thanks for your time Guys
