I hope I'm wrong but looks to me like fishing is over under the new rules and the way it's going that might well be it on the rivers until June 16th. Don't think the Angling Trust will convince the government this time.
Exercising and meeting other people
You should minimise time spent outside your home.
It is against the law to meet socially with family or friends unless they are
part of your household or support bubble. You can only leave your home
to exercise, and not for the purpose of recreation or leisure (e.g. a picnic
or a social meeting). This should be limited to once per day, and you
should not travel outside your local area.

Latest information from the Angling Trust.
We need to await tomorrow’s publication of the regulations necessary to enact this evenings announcement on a national lockdown by the Prime Minister. We will take professional advice and carefully review what they mean for angling and then publish guidelines for anglers, clubs, fisheries and all associated with our industry. We have spent today lobbying Cabinet members for outdoor recreational activities to remain specifically permitted and are disappointed that this may not be the case. We will publish an update here and on the Covid section of our website.
We will be extremely busy working on this and request that at this stage you do not contact with individual questions. Thank you.

I wouldn't read too much into that LBC article just yet, the Angling Trust don't sound anywhere near as positive as that. Until the Angling Trust gets some clarity, the only really safe option is to assume that you can't go fishing, even if you can walk to your chosen spot. I don't know about anyone else, but I can't afford a £200 fine for testing the waters. I'll look on the bright side, it saves me from the dilemma of going in the cold/rain/snow/wind/mud etc, or whether the river is at a decent level.
I'm not sure that it'll be quite that long before we're fishing again, but roll on my spring tench fishing.

This lockdown could easily take us to the coarse fishing closed season on rivers but at least we'll have the stillwaters, hopefully. I'll be disappointed to have no fishing for a while but realistically fishing's only a hobby and there's far bigger covid issues than me blanking in the mud on a weekend. In the meantime let's all do the right thing,at least at my age I'm near the top of the vaccination list .

If worst comes to worst, at least you'll have ended on a high note, Graeme.
I agree, the Angling Trust don't sound positive.

No fishing but hopefully we'll get by the river, swim hunting, weed, grass, Bush cutting etc. when we open up again. Not as good as fishing on the rivers but in my opinion the next best thing. I'm not usually a pond man, but I'm actually looking forward to a bit of carp bashing. Probably use the fly rod a lot more this season also.
At least you caught your clonking chub, Graeme, as you say this could be the end for my quest this season, ah well always next time.
Keep your heads down lads, chins up, we are nearly there as regards covid.

Oh well,no point being despondent. Start sorting out pole rigs and hooklengths at the weekend and got some walking to do along a new Tees stretch. I could probably walk it from source to sea in the time we've got .

Well look at this way. Travell a short distance for excercise is allowed. So my bits of river well within a 10 mile radius. Walk along the river carrying my gear. Excercise. Sit and wave my arms around casting. Excercise. Let's face it the majority of us never see another angler. Occasionally a dog walker. Went to Tesco this afternoon mingling with lots of other folk and attempted to keep a social distance. Had to tell a retard to back off as he pushed past me while l was selecting an item. So whats wrong with sitting alone on a river bank.

Be a lot more walkers out over the next few weeks, certainly lots more than there will be anglers on the bank but those are the rules and I'll be sticking to them. Fishing is important to me but not more than family even if some of the rules don't make sense sometimes. Let's stay safe ,lads.

The snag with the "short distance" is that there have been some hints of clarification that it means that you shouldn't be leaving your village parish/part of town for exercise. In effect, unless you are working, it means that the greatest distance that most of us should be going is to our local supermarket.
