Regularly catch bream around lower dinsdale now, in fact a match last year was actually won with about 60lb of bream around ther, once over you could fish halibut pellet and only ever expect to catch chub or a barbel if you were very lucky, now it's common to see your line go slack then tight and your rod tip nod back and forth and you know it's a bream 😉

Worth adding that those faster water bream are pretty decent fish, in my view at least.

Further comment. Yesterday out on the leven behind lngleby Barwick. River dirty brown and flowing fast. Three small 1lb chub all in pristine condition. And others did a lot better before the recent floods. A month ago we were catching up to 200 silvers in four hours. The river was rammed. Suddenly they departed obviously back to the Tees, or Lowe leven mouth area. I have fished the Tees since a child in the late 1950's. If ever a river has changed its ours. Uper reaches almost every tributary is dammed with a reservoir. Lower once tidal now dammed. Hard rock bottom in lots of places. Invasive species present that once would of been shot. Crayfish eating invertebrates and anything else. In the end just fish for what you can catch. That's why lm out with the pole and whip during summer.

Good point there, John, fishing for what you can catch. That's why I've bought a new float rod to use for dace in summer, as well as grayling just now.
I guess I could also have a go with a slider float for dace in winter on the lower river too. But it's a technique I haven't used much.

But after buying an 8m whip its been a revolution for me. Dead easy to fish the deep water. However only done it in the warmer months. Groundbait laced with dead maggot. And fishing live maggot over the groundbait with the weight well down the line. Big 3g float, 2.5g oilvett and a few no 8 shot down to the hook. Had a really big day catching bream up to 2.5lb which are real fun on a solid flick tip.

Thanks for that, John. Very useful info. Specially about the size of float and shotting.
So do you float fish much in winter, or is it feeder all the time, apart from grayling of course?

Now 72 and my hands are seizing up and fingers well bent. So unfortunately for me winter is now a ledger only pastime. Hands thrust into my pockets clutching my handwarmers. Just not a fan of the aging process but you just have to accept it.
