Rolling meat, up steaming or downstreaming

Has anyone tried either of these methods? I've tried it once a few weeks ago on a flooded tees but couldn't get to grips with it, if so any hints or tips would be greatly appreciated

I've tried it once or twice in the summer.
Big lump of meat freelined and cast slightly upstream,trick is to keep in touch with it as it rolls through.
Keep the rod up and mend the line,bit like you would with a stickfloat,and if it stops let it lie for a minute then lift the rod so it starts to roll again.
If the flow's quick add a bit of shot so it slows down or holds up.

do exactely what Graeme said,spot on advice.i find it easier the more pace the river has.you'll get to know the features on the bottom the more you fish a stretch.

keep your finger on the line aswell,some bites can be twitches on the end of the rod to a decent pull round.best bites you feel through the line.a little more practice and you'll get to know the difference between the bottom/debris to a bite.

also I find it better when wading in the summer.it can make a big difference between catching and not ones you'v masterd the art.

i watched a video of a bloke doing it for barbel and he had mastered it, it was good to watch like, ill see if i can find it.

You'll have the bail arm open and the line held in your left hand (I'm right handed).
Your fingers are very sensitive and you'll definitely feel the bite or the rod will bang over-unmissable

Just a tip to what i do when rolling, instead of putting shot on the line a better way in my opinion is to use a large hook say a 6 or even a 4 and wrap fuse wire or solder wire,or even better lead wire if you can get it around the shank of the hook, so its whipped up the shank(if you no what i mean??) this adds the extra weight but cant be seen by the fish and allows you better control and better presentation, its a method i pinched of Ray Walton

Cheers lads, gonna try it when the rivers up during a mild spell during a mild spell, I've watched a few vids on it, but nobody explains the process, it is supposed to be deadly once you've mastered it, I suppose you have to get the weight balance right for it to work. I've seen somewhere where you can use plasticine

Plastercine is ideal stops you fouling up and if you do it'll just drop away.
