Well had 24 hrs at Smeatons on the trent and in reflecting god we are lucky up here with our rivers for both scenary and imo the fishing .
So river first , got there after the river had gone up and was on its way down which became more visible each passing hour as gravel bars began showing on far bank .
Got van emptied then looked at our swims ,very m an made with concrete steps and laminated signs on fences .
I got end swim and river was bombing through ss obviously shallowed up where I was causing speed to pick up .
I fished during evening with 4oz lead and pellet catching 4 chub to 3lb and two barbel to 6 lb Didn't fish night much as was goosed lads with me had two barbel and four eels between them . All free swims were now taken and peace and quiet was at a premium even during night .
Next morning what a difference in river much clearer and normal I guess summer level
Hard going all day picking up ,5 chub a bream and eel between us .
Tea Time some barbel moved in with us catching 5 between us including a pb for my m8 of 12 lb 8oz
All told in session I had 6 chub and four barbel and am eel .
Now to what I didn't like , I might of been nieve but I didn't expect it to be so many made on banks , and I thought the bivvy Stella larger brigade to be there but they were , loud and brash and smell of green in the air .
Then the rats omg IV never seen so many on night we got there into dark im talking dozens and not shy of people .
So all in all a nice change but trust me I know there will be nice bits of Trent but that ain't one it could be but isn't. I longed to walk down the bank into distance where lots of trees and fish topping but was private , I won't be in no rush to go back
Swale wharfe and tees any day over Trent

Seen that place on youtube,Andy. Each to their own but it looks like a "river commercial" to me if there is such a thing and exactly why I've never considered devoting any time to fishing for barbel although I admire those like yourself who put in a lot of time and effort looking for them. Reminds me a bit of Cundall Lodge where I'm never sure if the lads are fishing or just on a camping trip along with with the usual antics that goes with it. Always seems popular though so maybe there's more to it than I imagine,at least you caught fish and it could have been worse. Still a good trip, well done.

It was only somewhere I may get a really big fish . Yeah greame it's commercial like and if you read my thread post I didn't like it .
It's awkward for me to cause fishing although I go on my own as often as I can , I have friends who for years I had pond trips and reservoir trips with who arnt really into river fishing ,so somewhere like that brings people together
From a barbel point of view I would never fish there again ,however although commercial like in it's banks as you know greame the fish are free to go where ever they like unlike pond fish that are trapped and fish were generally very clean so that atleast was pleasing .
But as I wrote I looked down stream way beyond the day ticket water to a heavily wooded narrower bit of river and often got the urge to dissapear on my own with a pocket full of pellets ,unhooking mat and a net , but the fall back is our lovely rivers which I hope to get on next week ,tight lines all

Just reading through threads again and was wondering greame if you meant barbel in general or just the Trent
The reason I ask is where I go for barbel up our way I never see hardly anyone at all which is why I love it ,and also imo why I have a lot of success
I don't go to where you jump out the car and fish on Swale or wharfe because it gets over fished and imo isn't the better areas for the species
I love barbel for the opposite reason to the Trent it's solitude and the take and fight from easily the strongest fish species iv encountered and only big fish iv not got is a pike .
But your right sitting amongst lots of anglers isn't my thing , and equally the leg work and effort isn't appealing to others ,but for me it's most rewarding feeling in fishing and why I love the northern rivers , me goal is tees barbel next and not one or two I mean regular success and IV got an area in mind , only thing is gonna be couple weeks before I have nuff free time to seriously try

only fished the trent a few times but it was a club stretch and a bit more scenic had the place to my self and manged 8 barbel one a PB 12lb 1oz.the trent in my opinion has gone a big mad now like carping fishing bivies all over and heavy tackle and just over crowded with numpties and couldnt think of anything worse but there is still a few nice spots away from all that but im not telling lol.least you got a few andy well done

Personally stevie I don't think the Trent has anything to offer that our rivers don't so won't be returning so your secrets are safe with you lol
Might try the wye or Severn tho

I've got nothing against barbel fishing or any other form of our great sport,I just couldn't sit on any riverbank that was crowded with other anglers and the inevitable bivvies. I'm not saying they shouldn't be there,if you pay your money you're entitled to be there but it's not for me. I've got the utmost respect for anyone who puts in the legwork and effort and is rewarded with a quality fish of any species but turning up on stretches of river that have been fished to death is not my idea of pleasurable angling. Be a sad day when I see a bivvy on any of the banks I fish, maybe I'm getting old and need to change my outlook but I'd get far more satisfaction from fishing an unknown stretch and getting a fish after months of trying rather than simply pitching up on a bank where all the work's been done by others. Just my opinion, not saying I'm right .

No I agree but where I go locally I don't see no one , its sad but good for me that people don't want to venture to far from car , but on Wharfe and Swale im unlucky if I see half dozen anglers all season
Barbel are easily the best fish imo to fish for ,times of day ,night, power , take , and another plus is I don't think iv ever had one hooked other than in the lips and mouth .
Locally I can't think of anywhere where there's camping other than cundall and I don't frequent there

Nice fishing Andy, at least you can say been there done that and have the tee shirt.
My Son is in the RAF in Lincoln area and I have fished Fiskerton with him early this year, that was nice, and I hope to go again this summer / autumn sometime.
He fishes at Collingham up around the 120 peg Mark and as for other anglers it's not to bad, probably they all go for the hot pegs 1 to 50.
I agree totally with Graemes comments even though I have fished the trent as above. Only I'm not getting old, I think I'm there already.
Tight lines all.
