best bet bud is pop into your local tackle shop. if they are anything like the shops in our area you'll get honest mature advice. it'll also give you a good idea of budget etc and you can have a little play before you buy which is always good. what works for one might not suit another, some like preston, some korum, some drennan we all have our preferances, least if you can hold a rod, stick a reel on you fancy you'l get a good idea what suits you.if you do spot anything you like stick a post up and the lads and myself will let you know how it performs if we have used one or know someone who has.what i will say for budget, korum rods are cheap and you get a lot for your money.drennan red range again a lot of rod for your penny's.the cheaper range of shimano also a good buy.

Don't know whether I've done the right thing now! I've brought a waggler pellet rod! I read a bit about them and they seem fun and interesting! This is the one I've purchased

That's fine mate and being a pellet waggler will have a little more backbone to handle any larger carp into mid doubles if one comes along, don't let the name pellet waggler fool you to much as it will be just as at home using it with any normal waggler floats and fishing for silver's, it's actually a good float rod to buy as it will cover a multitude of fish mate

I want to get out this weekend. I'm guessing the fish will be deep this time of year so will need to fish the bottom?

Yeh mate fish on the deck tbh you should always start on the bottom as a general guide then shallow up slowly if the bites die off, as the fish could be moving up to intercept your maggots or whatever bait your using if your feeding little and often, it's all trial and error really and half the fun can be the learning curve
